Federal Labor MP for Batman David Feeney signed the climate emergency petition this morning outside his office in Preston. Former Federal MP for Wills, Kelvin Thomson, was also present and signed the petition.

The occasion was a protest organised by Darebin Climate Action Now, but also involving members of Climate Action Moreland, to demand Federal Labor show leadership by saying no to the Adani Carmichael mine in Queensland. The mine will have a devastating effect on the Great Barrier Reef and a mind-blowing contribution to the climate emergency.

The event started at David Feeney’s office in Preston at 8.45am. It then travelled to Federal Opposition leader Bill Shorten’s office in Moonee Ponds.

Federal Labor are deeply divided on the issue of whether coal is good for humanity. It’s time for Bill Shorten, Peter Khalil (MP for Wills) and other Federal Labor MPs to stand up like David Feeney and Kelvin Thomson, to draw a line in the sand and show leadership on this issue.

At our first meeting with Peter Khalil MP we raised the issue of Labor’s lack of policy on export coal and the Adani mine and asked Peter Khalil to sign the climate emergency petition. We followed the meeting up with an email and a climate emergency poster that he could print and be photographed with. There has been no response so far.
