While Australia is dealing with a continuing pandemic with record new cases in Victoria, a zoom conference held by the Climate Action Network Australia launched a new website tool documenting the community emissions profile in each Local Government Area across Australia, including Moreland.

The launch was done by Beyond Zero Emissions Zero Carbon Communities and IronBark Sustainability for the Snapshot — community climate tool. Each municipality or shire will have reports on their emissions with sectorial analysis. It will allow Councils and local grassroots activists to target areas to reduce local emissions.

Local Council can use the profile to develop a Climate Emergency Action Plan.

The Moreland based Australian Energy Foundation also assists Councils in developing a tailored climate emergency climate action plan.

The provision of profiles covering every local government area in Australia, through the use of the standardised methodology of GHG Protocol Global Protocol for Community-Scale Greenhouse Gas Emission Inventories (GPC), is thought to be a global first for profiles covering a whole country.

Moreland Council has set a 2040 net zero emissions target in place.

The 2040 Framework (adopted in September 2018) outlines an evocative vision of a zero carbon Moreland by 2040.

The 2040 Framework clarifies 3 strategic directions with 2040 goals:

• Energy transition – Efficient and 100% renewably powered energy;
• Sustainable transport – Active or zero emissions transport; and
• Waste and consumption – Circular economy with zero waste including a zero waste to Landfill by 2030 target.

Earlier in 2020 a ClimateWorks report assessed that Moreland Council was one of the leaders in Australia on setting targets, ambition and putting in place policies and action plans to achieve those targets.
