From wandering around the stalls at the annual Glenroy Festival sustainability was an important theme in many of the stalls. Climate Action Merri-bek stall also had more interest and more bustle than previous years.
The new banners that we had workshoped (Facebook photos) to paint really made our stall stand out and be prominent. We were located next to Merri-bek Bicycle User Group Stall.
Of course, what made our stall successful were all of the volunteers who put in some time: John, Maggie, Andrea, Radha, Liz, Chris, Max (from NO Incinerators campaign), Maya (from Melbourne 350.org).
Or people like Sarah and Charmain associated with Merri Food Hub who came by, stayed and chatted for a while. Merri Food Hub do a culturally appropriate food stall at Fawkner Senior Citizens on Fridays and are trialling a food stall at Glenroy hub on Wednesdays. (Volunteers wanted)
Extreme Heat days increasing Display
We had a display on projected extreme heat for Glenroy, and Australia based on Climate Council/CSIRO research. Climate Council research shows Extreme heat days will double for most Australian cities by the end of the century. But the number of extreme heat days across Australia’s top will be particularly severe and will bring the risk of Lethal Humidity.

Climate Security and the threat of lethal humidity
Australian Climate Security leaders group recent publication – Too Hot to Handle – shows climate security implications, including from the risk of Lethal Humidity. The Australian Government have been too busy addressing external traditional security threats to pay sufficient attention to the climate crisis generated security threats, including from lethal heat in Australia’s north. The Federal Government have also refused to release a 2022 Office of National Intelligence report on climate security, even in a redacted form. This is a failure of Government transparency, of telling the truth. Of even undermining intelligent defence force preparations.
The Adaptation Game
We carried information on The Adaptation Game presently being played at Sussex neighborhood house, with planning underway for the game to be played in Fawkner. This scenario based game is developed specifically for the geography of Merri-bek. It provides real insights into adaptation choices we make as a community. The developers do nuanced versions for specific municipalities which provide localised insights of relevance.
We had information on the No Northern Incinerators Campaign (Facebook) that Max brought along. The Petition is still open. Submission on the Planning application are still open. See our submission on the EPA development licence.
Maya from 350 org collected for an online petition on our national nature laws. We provided encouragement for her to wander around and engage people with the petition.
Safe Sustainable Transport in Glenroy area survey
We had a safe sustainable transport for Glenroy survey in which we had 91 completed surveys.
We intend to do a blog post on this survey and also present the results to Broadmeadows Labor MP Kathleen Matthews Ward at a future date. The importance of this survey is amplified by the recent parliamentary inquiry report into vulnerable road users which made over 50 recommendations for improving transport safety, and especially for walking and cycling. Letters to Peter Khalil urging strong climate action.
We collected 33 personal letters to Peter Khalil at the Glenroy Festival , which we will present to his office on Sydney Road at 11am on Friday 10 May as part of Riseup for Climate events. Some of the comments are very moving, and we will publish them in a forthcoming blog post. See our blogpost on presenting 74 personal letters gathered from the Sydney Road Street Party, which we delivered on April 4.
