Letter to Peter Khalil: Climate and the ALP

This letter was sent to Peter Khalil MP for Wills by Bronwyn Plarre, a long-time member of Climate Action Merri-bek.

Bronwyn Plarre handed in Breakthrough and Aust. Security Climate Leaders Climate Group risk reports to Peter Khalil.

Dear Peter,                                                                                          12 August 2025

It is on behalf of Climate Action Merri-Bek and all young ones (that is, all people younger than me) that I want to plead with your government to realise just how urgent the Climate Crisis is, and how enmeshed it is with the many other mega crises the world is rolling towards now.

We have furnished you with much such information in the past, and yes, I hear the rhetoric that Australia does not want to be the first to stick its neck out and risk financial & political disadvantage.

But firstly Australia could be doing much, much more in the field of the first of the 3Rs; emission reduction (all, not just nationally produced emissions) and still not be disadvantaged when utilising our considerable scientific expertise, ingenuity and creativity. Secondly we are the best placed country to act boldly.

As the assistant Minister for Defence, I would expect that you would have by now read the ONI CCRAR, and I also expect that there will contain in that report similar prediction to future climate projections and scenarios as the ones contained in these reports. XR’s first demand is ’Tell the Truth’. Bring the Australian population along with you. Fight the mid-, dis- & mal-information; it will become more evident anyway, through more catastrophic events, and your Government will be caught out. You are in the best position now, with a super majority of seats, to end the stupid politicking around the climate ‘elephant in the policy room’. Surely at a global/regional security level – being on the front foot will be an advantage, let alone being recognised as a courageous government.

Bronwyn Plarre

And all in CAM who are motivated by the loss of our loved convenor, John Englart.
