Vigil to End Fossil Fuels restarts in 2026

The Vigil to End Fossil Fuels has restarted for 2026 outside the office of Peter Khalil MP, federal member for Wills.

A dedicated group of local residents gathered to remind Peter Khalil and the government that they must now act to phase out all fossil fuels – coal, gas and petrol – and replace them with renewables.

Australia is doing well with renewables in electricity – they kept our power on in the heatwaves! – but there’s a lot more to be done.

It’s not a simple task, but it is important, and the government has finally committed to it by signing the Belém Declaration to transition away from fossil fuels.

Now we need to hold them to their promises.

The climate movement across Australia will be calling on the government to phase out all fossil fuels, including our exports of coal and gas, which are our biggest contribution to global warming.

Having just gone through January with multiple heatwaves, we know only too well that global warming is getting worse.

Now Australia must do our bit to stop it by phasing out fossil fuel use and exports.

At the end of the vigil we delivered a message to Peter Khalil to remind him of the promises he made at our last meeting and let him know we will be following up.

Members of the public are welcome to join us for a chat or to ask questions every Tuesday between 11 am – 1 pm at 466-468 Sydney Rd, Coburg (just south of the intersection with Bell St).

See you there to support a liveable future for children and future generations!
