Welcome to the Municipality of Merribek and the Federal Electorate of Wills.
Electoral boundaries have changed since the last Federal election and your home is now in the Wills electorate. You can check your enrollment with the Australian Electoral Commission here.
Wills is an electorate that is proudly multicutural and cares deeply about connections to community and to nature.
The Electorate of Wills
The electorate of Wills was created in 1949. It covers and aligns mostly with the municipality of Merri-bek, as well as a portion of the Melbourne City Council, a portion of the Moonee Valley City Council, and a portion of Yarra City Council.
Named in honour of William John Wills, 1834–61. Wills was the surveyor and astronomer of an ultimately unsuccessful 1860 government expedition to cross Australia from Melbourne to the Gulf of Carpentaria.
It was the electorate of Labor Prime Minister Bob Hawke from 1980 to 1992. Phil Cleary (Independent) 1992-1996. Kelvin Thomson (ALP) 1996-2016. Peter Khalil (ALP) 2016 onwards.
Climate leadership in Wills
Australia is at a crossroads when it comes to national climate and fossil fuel policy.
Wills residents are already experiencing the impacts of accelerating climate change. More frequent heat waves, floods, and extreme weather threaten our communities, infrastructure, and local nature.
Despite the intensifying harm caused by climate impacts, Australia continues to fuel the problem. Even though Australia has world leading solar and wind resources, and massive potential for renewables-led exports, our government still approves coal mine expansions and promotes gas exports. Currently, including exports, Australia contributes a whopping 4.5% of global emissions, continuing to damage our climate.
The clock is ticking on this critical decade for climate action. Will Australia take steps to rein in polluting coal and gas corporations and secure a safe climate?
With the right leadership we can grasp the immense economic opportunities offered by becoming a clean energy superpower in a decarbonising world with green manufacturing, exports and future focused jobs.
We are a community which supports strong Climate Action and hope you will join us as we:
