Climate Debate: Kelvin Thomson and David Spratt

Thanks to all the attendees of the climate debate. The night was a great success with over 150 attending.

Video of the speeches is at the Northcote Independent. Below is a report from David Spratt, and following that a report from an audience member which includes a link to his video of the main speeches.

From David Spratt:

“Last night, Monday 20 April 2009, I had an opportunity to debate the topic “Climate Change: What Should the Federal Government Be Doing?” with Kelvin Thomson, the Labor member for the federal parliamentary seat of Wills at a public meeting organised by the recently-formed Climate Action Moreland. The two speeches were followed by almost an hour of energetic comments and Q and A.  Thanks Climate Action Moreland for putting on a great event, with more than 150 attending, and a lot of new members signed up.

From Takver:

“I have published the video of the principal speeches by climate activist David Spratt and Kelvin Thomon from last night’s Climate debate organised by Climate Action Moreland. View for yourself how Kelvin justifies (not) the Federal Government climate strategy.  Low res video of 34 mins 6 secs

The hall was packed with probably 150 people. After the main speeches by David and Kelvin there were questions from the floor, mainly directed at Kelvin and what the Rudd Government is doing and should be doing. There were a few skeptics at the meeting, but largely people who were very concerned about climate change and global warming and actively interrogating their local Member of Parliament. Kelvin maintained caucus solidarity and refused to spill the beans on parliamentary colleagues supporting the vested interests of existing energy interests, particularly the coal lobby.”

Kelvin Thomson has also produced a video of the event for this YouTube site, its available at
