Election 2013: Wills candidate community forum on climate and sustainability

For the 2013 Federal Election, come and hear what the candidates have to say about policies, particularly on climate change and sustainability. The Following Wills Candidates have agreed to attend:

  • Dean O’CALLAGHAN, (Save the Planet)
  • Kelvin THOMSON, (Australian Labor Party)
  • Margarita WINDISCH, (Socialist Alliance)
  • Tim READ, (Greens)

We are hoping that the other candidates: Shilpa Hegde for the Liberal Party and Adrian Trajstman for the Australian Sex Party, and any other candidate that registers for the poll in Wills, will also come along to highlight their climate and sustainability policies.

We are also sending a questionnaire to each candidate on climate and sustainability issues, and hope to publish their considered responses on our website, as a guide to residents who can’t make the public forum.

Climate Action Moreland has organised this event but is supported by other community groups around Moreland including: Moreland Bicycle Users Group (BUG), Brunswick Residents Network, CERES, Sustainable Fawkner, Friends of Upfield Linear Park

  3. I would be great if this was in the mass media. I’m sure a lot of people not affiliated with these groups would like to know about it. Not everyone is on facebook especially in the Pascoe Vale area…

  5. Statement from Adrian Trajstman, Sex Party

    Unfortunately I will be unavailable on the evening of Monday 19th August, however I have outlined some of the Australian Sex Party’s views and some of my personal views regarding environmental issues below for consideration by Climate Action Moreland.

    The Australian Sex Party does not have a policy which explicitly addresses climate change. That said, the Australian Sex Party acknowledges that climate change is real and is supportive of market-based mechanisms for dealing with this issue. We know that putting a price on greenhouse gas emissions is crucial and will create a market for new clean energy.

    The Australian Sex Party has no plans to abolish the Independent Climate Change Authority whatsoever. We are a party that bases our policy on scientific evidence and I personally welcome ongoing investigation into the divisive issue of coal & gas power and coal seam gas mining.

    The Australian Sex Party recognises that there are places in Australia where coal seam gas exploration and development are clearly not appropriate. We are supportive of more research and discussion of clean energy options.

    The Australian Sex Party supports the revocation of Planning Amendment VC82 which unfairly blocks new wind farm development.

    The Australian Sex Party would like to see at least a 5-star energy standard for all Victorian homes by 2020. With regards to renewable energy, I personally welcome support for more eco-friendly energy options.

    I applaud community groups for raising awareness on issues relating to climate change, liaising with elected officials and encouraging individuals and groups in our community to live a more eco-friendly existence and minimise their carbon footprint. I think it’s fantastic that Wills is clearly an environmentally-conscious electorate and I applaud community groups such as Climate Action Moreland, Moreland Energy Foundation, Sustainable Fawkner, Green Renters and others for drawing community attention to direct ways that individuals and groups are able to live a more eco-friendly existence.

    The Australian Sex Party would like to see the end of logging of Victorian old-growth forests. I personally believe that Australia’s forests and wilderness areas are beautiful, unique and some of our nation’s greatest assets. I personally favor conservation over development. I applaud the groups and individuals that recognise that our forests are irreplaceable areas worth protecting.

    With regards to zero/low emissions transport, The Australian Sex Party does not have a policy which explicitly addresses this. The Australian Sex Party would like to see 24 hour public transport on weekends in Victoria, with appropriate security personnel. The Australian Sex Party opposes the drastic plans for the East-West tollway and would prefer to see the money used for improving public transport infrastructure instead.

    I would welcome greater emphasis placed on supporting and promoting more environmentally-friendly forms of transport such as bike-riding and public transport. I have personally chosen to not own or drive a car for a plethora of primarily environmental reasons and utilise public transport myself regularly.

    I would like to see focus and funds directed towards new public transport infrastructure and the improvement of existing public transport infrastructure as opposed to the proposed expensive, intrusive and environmentally devastating development that is the East-West tollway.
