Residents Horrified, Engaged and Aghast Once They Learn Victoria’s Dirty Secret!

Waste Incinerators in Victoria: Climate Action Merri-bek members asked the questions and the community responded!

412 locals completed survey questions about waste incinerators proposed for Victoria. Community members were surveyed at railway stations, local festivals and other events over four weeks. Here is a quick summary of the findings:

We found an overwhelming objections to the proposed incinerators:

  • Only 7% of people supported the idea of waste incinerators while 88% were not in support.
  • The major concerns about the proposals were Air Pollution, Health Impacts, Water Contamination and Climate Impacts
  • over three-quarters of respondents rejected government plans to permit the waste incinerators
  • Residents are in the dark about the proposed waste incinerators with the vast majority of respondents not knowing about the waste incinerator proposals before undertaking the survey.

Many respondents posed questions for the candidates in the upcoming Victorian election. For example:

  • How will you ensure everyone knows about these incinerators and knows the health risks involved?
  • Will you stop them being built?
  • How will you ensure the amount of (domestic and industrial) waste generated is reduced?
  • What do you know about the impact of these incinerators on air quality, soil integrity, food security, children’s health and climate change?
  • Do you support the Global Plastics Treaty?
